My Daughter’s Baby

Kate Hewitt is skilled at writing emotionally powerful stories about love, loss, and complicated family dynamics. My Daughter’s Baby is no exception. Right away, the novel sweeps you into a world of grief, secrets, and hard choices, laced with hope.

The story opens with Eleanor hearing that her daughter, Sophie, has passed away while giving birth. Eleanor rushes to the hospital and faces the heartbreaking truth of holding her unknown grandchild. In that moment, she sees a chance to make amends for the years of distance between them. But across from her is Tom, Sophie’s husband, whom she holds responsible for the separation. The story that unfolds is a deeply emotional struggle between two people united by loss, attempting to make the best decisions for the orphaned baby Sophie.

Hewitt portrays Eleanor’s grief and guilt with great sensitivity. Through her inner conflict—wanting to do right by her grandson while wrestling with her distrust of Tom—we see the complexity of motherhood, forgiveness, and second chances. The book’s genuine power comes from how honest it is; it doesn’t offer quick fixes, just the messy, real way people get over tough stuff.

The story moves at a good pace, and switching between Eleanor and Tom lets you see what they’re both going through. Hewitt doesn’t make either character a villain, but reveals how miscommunication, pride, and unexpressed affection can tear families apart. Her words are delicate but real, often making you cry, yet hopeful.

You’ll find My Daughter’s Baby to be a story both heartbreaking and redemptive. We’re reminded that forgiveness is usually late, but love can happen anytime.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
